Sample preparation: managing high concentration samples

This video demonstrates a way that OMMICA’s test kits may be adapted to test high concentration samples, such as lean or rich MEG, or THPS commercial stocks (which are typically around 70 to 80% in water).

The kits were originally designed for analysing dilute samples (typically below 100 ppm), as that was what was needed in the industry.

However, inquiries were received, asking whether the kit could be used for testing very high concentrations (over 50%), as found in the outputs of MEG regeneration plants (“Lean” and “Rich” MEG), as an accurate alternative to refractometry, which can be affected by other components in the mixture, such as salts or MDEA.

In-house development was performed, which showed that a simple two-step volumetric process (i.e. just using liquid volumes, not weights) gave accurate and reproducible results.

This process has also been externally validated, by Curtin University in Australia case , confirming the reliability of the method, accurate to better than +/- 2%.

With the more recent development of the THPS test, the same procedure was confirmed for applicability when checking the commercial THPS stock concentration.

Once diluted, the sample may be analysed following the standard OMMICA assay protocol (this dilution method is applicable to all aqueous samples analysed by any of the OMMICA kits).

1% is equivalent to 10,000 ppm, therefore using a dilution factor of 1/10,000 means that the result obtained in the assay can be directly read as % (e.g. 57 ppm in the assay corresponds to an initial concentration of 57% in the sample).
